Founding of America, on the Basis of Faith

America is at a pivot where she must decide whether to fallow God or fallow the ways of the world. As a nation, America will face many obstacles ahead and the first will be on November 3rd. God’s hand will be on this country as it has in blessing. His hand will be against us in cursing, less we change our ways. 

Scripture tells us in Psalms 33:12, “Blessed is the nation who’s God is the Lord…”. America has been greatly blessed and this can be see in her founding. While there is no establishment of a national religion, as prohibited by the United States Constitution – as will be discussed in the next section. There are founding principles and doctrines that support the idea of a Christian founding. To illustrate the idea of America as a Christian Nation, one must look back to the founders and early leaders. 

On November 11, 1620, prior to embarking for the shores of America, the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact that declared: “Having undertaken, for the Glory of God and the advancement of the Christian Faith and honor of our King and country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia,”.

On July 4, 1776, America’s Founding Fathers, after appealing to the “Laws of Nature, and of Nature’s God” to justify their separation from Great Britain, then declared: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”.

 In 1781, Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence and later the Nation’s third President, in his work titled “Notes on the State of Virginia” wrote: “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God. That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.”.

On May 14, 1787, George Washington, as President of the Constitutional Convention, rose to admonish and exhort the delegates and declared: “If to please the people we offer what we ourselves disapprove, how can we afterward defend our work? Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest can repair; the event is in the hand of God!”.

 On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address on the site of the battle and declared: “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us–that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion–that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain–that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom–and that Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from   the earth.”.

George Washington said, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits and to humbly implore His protection and favor”.

John Adams said, “We recognize no sovereign but God”.

Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story said, “There has never been a period in which the Common Law did not recognize Christianity as lying it’s foundation”.

John Quincy Adams said, “In the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior. The Declaration of Independence laid the corner stone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity”.

When they met at the constitutional convention, Benjamin Franklin, called for prayer.

In 1956, the 84th Congress under presidential approval required  that all currency display: “In God we Trust”. 

Over the main entrance to Langdell Hall at Harvard Law School, is the inscription: “ 
“NON SVB HOMINE SED SVB DEO ET LEGE” it means, “Not under man but God and Law”.

There is a phrase “One nation under God”, is seen in the pledge.  It means that this nation, this flag, and this government is a gift from the Lord God all mighty. As pointed out earlier Scripture says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”.  America has remained strong in her faith through the difficult days of the Revolution, through two World Wars, trough plagues and anything else this nation has faced. It is imperative that today, America remain strong and steadfast in faith. 

Under God and Freedom of Religion

One may ask how is it possible to be “One Nation Under God”, while maintaining the freedom religion. The answer is rather simple, free will. God has given us the right to choose, between good and evil – as does America. The constitution has given AmericanS the right to choose, who they worship, how they worship and where they worship. 

By saying, “America is one Nation Under God” is not infringing on ones right, it is simply declaring and affirming the heritage and founding of this great country. However, with this in mind, religious tolerance is they key to maintaining peace among fellow Americans. Evangelism is a focal point in Christianity, and sharing your belief is one thing and forcing that belief on a person is another issue. As Americans we need to be understanding of how fellow Americans choose to worship or not worship. 

While America was found on Christian principle and is essentially a Christian nation, it is a melting pot of all people, of all faiths and walks of life. Within each religion, there are those who have radical beliefs or beliefs that do not essentially match the majority. In America today, there are those professing Christians that condone and approve of racism. Christ would not approve of racism, as scripture teaches to love others. However, it goes along with all the other sins of the world. The word “sin” in the Greek is “hamartia”, which means ‘to miss the mark’. Therefore all things are compared to the mark Christ set and mankind can not achieve that standard. So, all things man does is essentially sin and all sins are equal in the image of God (James 2:10). 

In light of these things, the idea that America is not and can not be a Christian nation because of sin, is inaccurate. This means that our history no matter how dark it maybe; does not alter the idea of America as a Christian Nation.  In Luke 23, Jesus is on the Cross and pleads for forgiveness for the criminals beside him, because “they did not know what they were doing”(Luke 23:34).  As the story continues, one criminal said, “Remember me when you come into you kingdom” and Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:42-43). No matter how dark the past is it does not alter the idea of Christianity. As this criminal on the cross, having a dark past is a repentant christian. America can be and is a Christian nation. 

Freedom of Religion

The First Amendment to the Constitution states that “Congress shall make o law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” The Establishment Clause prohibits government from making a religion. The free exercise clause, is what gives citizens the right to practice the religion of their choosing. 

However, as a nation we have seen that Christ has been at the very root of our founding. It directly yields to the morality of the United States. The saying, “One Nation Under God” is a phrase that is seen in the pledge and it is a phrase that brings us together as a nation. The term “God” in this phrase can be a broad term, to include those with different beliefs.  No matter the belief one has to acknowledge a sovereign force, a god.  What about atheism? Atheism falls into a different category, it is term used to describe the refusal to believe what is clearly in front of you. It is rejecting the very ideals of what it means to be an American. 

End Times in America

However, today this desire for a steadfast faith is not the case many times. In recent years and even in recent days America is faced with racial discord, the removal of prayer from our schools, we see murder of the most innocent – an unborn child, the love of self, violence and lies. Today, America is true LY on a collision course with judgment, unless she turns around to a Christ. 

However, scripture clearly explains that this is Biblical in Luke 21:25-28. 

             “Then there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and there will be anguish on the earth among nations bewildered by the roaring sea and waves. People will faint from fear and expectation of the things that are coming on the world, because the celestial powers will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near! “ (Luke 21:25-28 HCSB). 

Doctor Adrian Rogers, who pastored Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, the tree time president of the Southern Baptist Convention, teacher and and founder of: “Love Worth Finding Ministries” and “The Adrian Rogers Pastor Training Institute would say:

             We’re living in strange days, are we not? When I see what’s happening to this world, if I didn’t know the Lord Jesus Christ, I’m not sure what I would do. Yet, knowing the Bible and Bible prophecy, when I see all these things coming to pass, they do not shake me. Sometimes they grieve me, sometimes they sadden me, but they do not shake me. That’s because I know God’s Word. I know they’re a fulfillment of prophecy. I can say with all the saints, “Praise God, it’s getting gloriously dark.”

Truly it is getting “Gloriously Dark” and America needs to be ready for the return of The Lord Jesus Christ. America is in need of  a spiritual revival to sweep through this nation. Scripture teaches that no one knows the time or date of Christ return (Matthew 24:36). What is known  though is that, the world has been living in the “Last Days” for the past 2000 years. America must realize that Christ is coming again and that Corporate America will be judged as will each individual.  In the “Letter to the Church in Laodicea”, the church had essentially lost the fire for Christ. In this letter found in Revelation, Christ is calling for them to repent and live only for him and not if that of earthly desire. This is the same call for America, a call for repentance. 

The only hope America has is through Christ. Scripture is clear that no one gains access to God, unless through the Son (John 14:6). 

There is a God in Heaven and it is not too late for America! Revival often comes in times of great trials. First Great Awakening is a prime example of this. During this time  there had became a dryness in worship. People were simply going through the motions of worship.  On July 8, 1741 – Jonathan Edward’s gave his message “Sinners in the Hand’s of an Angry God”. This message sparked a revival that swept through the colonies and it became known as the First Great Awakening.  Edward’s wanted people to understand that we are totally dependent on God and without his hand we will fail. With God it is not to late for revival in America.

The Threat to America 

Over the years America has faced many threats. ISIS and other Radical Islamic Extremists have threatened the American way of life for years. In 2000, Al Qaeda bombed the USS Cole, the 9/11 attacks, the 2012 Benghazi attack and other acts of terror. More frequently that this, America is attacked by politicians with an agenda. These politicians want nothing to do with God. In 2017 at a confirmation hearing for Amy Coney Barrett, for the 7th Circuit, Senator Dianne Feinstein said “The dogma lives loudly within you and that’s of concern”.  However, none of these pose the greatest threat to America. As Franklin Graham stated in a recent article, our biggest threat is from with in our nation, as we turn our back on God and He removes his hand of protection over our country. 

We see this in scripture when God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their grave sins. Abraham plead for God to spare the righteous. God agreed to spare the cities if 10 righteous people can be found.  Two angels are sent just to find that only Lot and family were righteous. The angel warns Lot and his family to evacuate and as they do Lot’s wife looks back and the city is turned to a pillar of salt. 

 Political Parties

It is essential to understand that salvation does not belong to a specific political party. Sanctification is not just for the republicans or democrats. It is for anyone who receives Christ as Lord.  Since the Reagan Presidential Campaign, America has to some extent tied Christianity to the Republican Party. It is essential that Americans and all believers remain independent. Not to say you can not affiliate with a particular party , but to remain independent to a point that a believer can declare to a Republican or Democrat alike, that “you must turn to Christ”. 

On this note, it is important though to support leaders who will fallow the will of Christ. Godly leadership is essential. There are a few things though Christians should look for in leaders according to scripture. America needs leaders who will be pro-life, recognizing that every child is a gift from the Lord God. In Genesis 12:3, an emphasis is put on Israel. America needs leaders who will support Israel. All throughout the Old and New Testaments scripture teaches marriage is between one man and one woman – another characteristic Christians should seek out. Outside of these Biblical beliefs, Christians should seek the candidates who will best preserve the Freedom of Religion and Christian – Family Values. 

Conclusion

Today, America needs to seek the face of God more than ever. America needs a spiritual revival. . God has raised up mighty leaders that has had a part in revival – Billy Graham, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Martin Luther, Calvin, The Wesley’s and the list goes on. God can use anyone!
